The mascot of this edition is LA’EEB, which is an Arabic word meaning 'super-skilled player'. He belongs to a parallel mascot-verse that is indescribable, where tournament mascots live. It is a world where ideas and creativity form the basis of characters that live in the minds of everyone. He is made up of a 'Kufiya', the traditional Arabic male headdress and an 'Agal' to hold it in place. La’eeb encourages everyone to believe in themselves as ‘Now is All’ and thus he will bring the joy of football to everyone. He is courageous and uplifting and has attended every previous FIFA World Cup tournament and has contributed to some of the most famous moments in football history.

FIFA once again organized the football World Cup, a competition which joins all the national teams in the world in trying to qualify for the final stages of the tournament, which then crown one nation as the World Champion. This was the 22nd edition of the competition and the 13th edition that the final prize was the FIFA cup.
It was the first time that Qatar hosted the World Cup, the second edition hosted in the Asian continent and the first one hosted in an Arab country. Due to the high summer temperatures in Qatar, the World Cup was played for the first time in winter.
Argentina, the reigning South American Champions, won the World Cup for the third time (1978, 1986, 2022), thus becoming the fourth nation to win the World Cup three times, the second South American nation to do so. They become World Champions 36 years after winning their last World Cup in 1986. It was the first time Argentina won the World Cup outside the Americas.
The former World Champions, France, finished Runners-Up after losing the Final against Argentina. Italy, the reigning European Champions, failed to qualify for the final tournament for the second time in a row. This was the third time that the Azzurri failed to qualify for the final stages of the World Cup (1958, 2018, 2022) and the fourth time the Italian National Team missed the World Cup finals, since in the first edition (1930), like many other European countries, they boycotted the tournament held in Uruguay. The hosting nation, Qatar, who were the reigning Asian Champions, finished in the 32nd position of the tournament ranking, the last place. The reigning North & Central America Champions, U.S.A., finished in the 12th position and the African Champions, Senegal, in the 15th position.

WORLD CUP 2022 HOSTING BIDS
The new FIFA 2007 hosting policy was used for the first time in this bidding process. The policy says that any country may bid for a World Cup, provided that their continental confederation has not hosted either of the past two World Cups. Thus countries from South America and Europe were eliminated for this bid. Originally there was seven bids, five from Asia and two from Central / North America, but two of them were cancelled before individual evaluations began - Indonesia was disqualified due to lack of governmental support and Mexico withdrew its bid for financial reasons. The selection was to be made between Australia, Japan, Qatar, South Korea and U.S.A. and voting was done on the 2 December 2010 by twenty-two of the twenty-four FIFA Executive Members. The formula used was that any bid that receives more than twelve votes will be declared the winner, however if no bid receives the twelve votes, then the least voted country in the round will be eliminated and the voting goes for another round until a winner is declared. The first to be eliminated was Australia, then Japan in round two, South Korea in round three and finally U.S.A. was eliminated in round four after losing 8-14 to Qatar. After the selection, controversy erupted regarding allegations of possible vote buying. In November 2014, German judge Hans-Joachim Eckert, chairman of the FIFA Ethics Committee's adjudication chamber published a 42-page summary of the findings of the report of U.S. lawyer Michael J. Garcia, chairman of the investigative chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee. It cleared Qatar of any wrongdoing during the bidding stage, but was harsh on Australia, who had an unsuccessful World Cup bid, finding "potentially problematic facts and circumstances" in their bid and stating that they had undermined the integrity of the bidding. Japan and South Korea were also criticized in the report.
